Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan has claimed that the music industry has been "taken over by poseurs".
Speaking at a public one-on-one talk with author Brian Solis as part of this year's SXSW festival, the frontman argued that he had been part of a generation of artists who had wanted to change the world and that today's crop of musicians were only obsessed with being famous.
According to Billboard, the singer said: I was part of a generation that changed the world – and it was taken over by poseurs.
Corgan, who claimed that he would need to set himself on fire on YouTube if he was starting his career today and also compared being a breakthrough artist to being a "fresh stripper", added: "[Artists that break through now] have grown up thinking that being famous is the goal. Not to be respected - not to be dangerous."
He also used Lana Del Rey's much-criticised performance on Saturday Night Live in January of this year to bolster his argument. "It doesn't surprise me that she crashed and burned, because she wasn't ready for it," he said. "I didn't think it was that bad."
Corgan is set to have a busy 2012 – in addition to releasing the new Smashing Pumpkins album 'Oceania', which he has described as his "best album for 16 years", he also has plans to open a Chicago teahouse and continue work with his own professional wrestling company.
